Brain disease could affect more people, research finds

A new form of brain disease, similar to Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease, could affect more people than previously thought, researchers in the US say. Nike Air Zenyth It had been thought that only people with one genetic profile were vulnerable to the prion disease VPSPr. But in an Annals of Neurology study, Case Western Reserve University experts found people with all three possible gene patterns are affected by VPSPr. They say the findings could help with the treatment of prion diseases. Although it is a prion disease like vCJD, VPSPr is not linked to eating infected meat. Air Max 24-7 However, like CJD, the new condition happens sporadically. It was first identified because of the fast-advancing form of dementia seen in those affected. They were also unable to speak or move. But tests for CJD proved negative. Further molecular examination showed VPSPr was a prion disease, but one which looked very different to those already known. Mechanism Womens Air Max 1 The human prion protein gene comes in three variants, depending on which amino acid the prion proteins contain - valine (V) or methionine (M). People can be VV, MM or MV. The first clutch of cases identified all had the VV variant. However, these latest cases included people with the other variants too. Air Max 24 7 Despite extensive research, a relatively large group of neurodegenerative diseases associated with dementia remain undefined. Pierluigi Gambetti, a professor of pathology at Case Western who led the research, told the BBC: "Since this new disease shows several differences to other prion diseases, it is most likely that VPSPr is caused by a mechanism that is different from other prion diseases currently known. "This newly identified human prion disease provides us with an excellent opportunity to investigate new ways of causing the disease that abnormal prion proteins may follow. Womens Air Max 2000 "This in turn may facilitate our efforts to develop therapeutic strategies for these devastating neurodegenerative disorders." Rescuers busy searching possible survivor in mudslide-hit town in NW China

Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor inair shox shoes a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China. Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides. About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of Nike Basketball Shoeslife near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said. Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing. NSTB Finds No Evidence of Mayday Call in Alaska Crash U.S. transportation-safety investigators said they have no evidence of distress calls from the plane that crashed two days ago in Alaska, killing former Senator Ted Stevens and four of eight other people on board. The National Transportation Safety Board began investigating the accident’s causes yesterday and plans to air forceinterview flight service workers and personnel from the lodge where the trip originated and the fishing camp that was the intended destination, board Chairman Deborah Hersman said today in a press briefing in Anchorage. Stevens, an Alaska Republican, and survivor Sean O’Keefe, chief executive officer of North American operations for European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co., were in a group planning to fish for silver salmon when the plane crashed near Dillingham, Alaska. The lodge, camp and plane are owned by General Communication Inc., the Alaskan telecommunications provider. Injuries suffered byair force shoes O’Keefe, the former head of the U.S. space agency, and his son Kevin, also aboard the plane, “do not appear to be life-threatening and we are confident they will have a full recovery,” said Paul Pastorek, Louisiana state superintendent of education, speaking today for the O’Keefe family in an e-mailed statement. The crashed plane may have gone unnoticed for as long as six hours based on the timeline the NTSB is compiling. Investigators will ask about flight procedures, Hersman said. Survivor Interviews Thwartedbuy Adidas Shoes NTSB investigators tried today to interview the survivors who were transported yesterday to an Anchorage hospital, and were unable to because of “their medical condition,” Hersman said, without giving details. The plane, a DeHavilland DHC-3T built in 1957 and equipped with floats, hit the ground first with its left wing, Hersman said. The fuselage is largely intact and the engine still attached, she said. None of the passengers was ejected in the crash that occurred in an area of very dense vegetation and about 800 feet elevation, she said. The plane crashed about 15 minutes away by air fromcheap Adidas Shoes the GCI lodge and investigators don’t know the route of the plane, which departed the lodge between 2 and 3 p.m. local time, Hersman said. Investigators plan to interview personnel from the lodge and camp, she said. GCI asked the local flight-service station for a search and rescue response for the missing plane about 7 p.m. and a pilot of a Cessna 207 who was in the area and assisted reported the wreckage had been located about an hour later, Hersman said.air shox shoes online Nike Basketball Shoes online air force shoes online Nike Dunk Shoes online Vibram Five Fingers online

Breast cancer deaths fall in UK

Breast cancer deaths have fallen in the UK since the 1980s, but mortality rates from the disease continue to be among the highest in Europe, a study shows. Air Max 1 The review of 30 countries, led by French researchers, showed the UK rate dropped by about a third, thanks to better care and speedier diagnosis. The number of UK deaths caused by breast cancer fell to 28.2 per 100,000 - equivalent to 12,000 deaths per year. The government said more progress, such as earlier diagnosis, was still needed. Researchers looked at the rate at which breast cancer was highlighted as a cause of death from 1987-9 and compared that with 2004-6, the British Medical Journal reported. Air Max Solas Overall the mortality rate across the 30 countries fell by a fifth to 24 per 100,000 deaths. Spain had the lowest rate at 18.9. The UK, by comparison, fell from 41.6 to 28.2 per 100,000. 'Terrific boost' But despite the progress, the UK was still lagging behind countries such as Romania and Estonia as well as the likes of Germany and France. Air Max 1 Leather The researchers at France's International Prevention Research Institute said the falls seen in most countries could be attributed to faster diagnosis and better quality care - although they admitted some variations in performance could be down to the different way deaths are recorded. They said they would expect the UK death rate to continue improving and finally reach the top performers, although they added lifestyles may be hampering progress to some extent. Factors such as drinking, obesity and the age at which a woman has children all influence the likelihood of breast cancer developing. Air Max ST Hilary Tovey, Cancer Research UK's policy manager, hailed the "great progress" being made. But she said: "The UK has seen greater decreases in the number of women dying from breast cancer than many other European countries over this period, though this is partly because death rates were relatively high in the 1980s." Former breast cancer patient Marilyn Morris told the BBC that the report's findings would encourage people fighting the disease. Air Max 1 Mesh "It will be a terrific boost to anybody that's diagnosed with breast cancer just to know that there is hope. Things have got so much better recently and monthly there's progress being made, so anything that gives people hope is wonderful news," she said. The findings chime with research into cancer survival rates - another measure of how well health services are performing. Since the 1980s, there have been a number of significant changes to breast cancer care, including the introduction of the screening programme in 1988 and, more recently, a host of waiting time targets. Air Max Terra Ninety A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "The rapid drop in breast cancer mortality rates shows that the changes the NHS made in treatment, screening and access to drugs have really made a difference. "However, England's breast cancer mortality is still lagging behind that of other countries, which is why we are focusing on improving outcomes and achieving earlier diagnosis." David Cameron faces a history of complexity on US trip

In modern politics perception is everything and armies ofair shox shoes diplomats and press officers are engaged to make sure that we perceive what we are meant to perceive. When former Prime Minister Gordon Brown last came to Washington the trip was held to be a disaster. He was portrayed as a kind ofNike Basketball Shoes foreign-policy Norman Wisdom, reeling and stumbling from one humiliation to another. There was no state dinner. He presented President Barack Obama with a fabulous gift carved from the wood of an old slaving ship and received in return just a couple of DVDs. And finally their brief joint press conference was conducted sitting in easy chairs, rather than standing at podiums. It was a catastrophe; Gordon Brown had been snubbed and Vibram Five Fingersthe special relationship just was not special any more. David Cameron's first trip to Washington as prime minister has been calibrated with agonising care to ensure that even the thinnest-skinned socialite or hardest-hearted tabloid headline writer could no possibly interpret it as humiliating. There were podiums; there was the obligatory over-run of MBT Shoestalks to imply a closeness bordering on hunger for each other's company and there was the unique access - how many other foreign leaders have been shown the carefully-tidied bedrooms of the Obama daughters? There was heavy-handed banter about whether you drink your beer warm or cold. And there were the words - which were decidedly warm. Britain tends to work itself into a frenzy overnike shoes just how special the "special relationship" remains in the modern world and America does not. But Mr Obama made a heroic effort to put the issue to bed, talking of how the two men had made a brilliant start as partners, how the two countries had the closest intelligence co-operation of any partners on earth and declaring simply that the US has "no closer ally and no stronger partner". This is not, you suspect, about discount Nike Shoesthe White House preferring Mr Cameron to Mr Brown - it is possible that Team Obama studied how Mr Brown's trip was reported and realised that its attempts to cut some of the flummery out of these visits had backfired. Mr Cameron himself had rather a deft go at putting the issue to bed in an article written for the Wall Street Journal on the morning of his meeting at the White House. He set out his own links with the United States - and his love of the place and what it has done for the world - in a way which will appeal to many Americans. And he warned against the absurdity of applying the techniques of wholesale nike shoeswhat he called Kremlinology to the relationship between the UK and its oldest and staunchest ally. He even offered this accurate depiction of how proponents of the view that the relationship is in decline have worked. "They forensically compute the length of meetings," he wrote, "whether it's a brush-by or a full bilateral... dissecting the location and grandeur of the final press conference - fretting even over whether you're standing up or sitting down together." However ludicrous it might benike shoes on sale, however, it certainly looked as though Team Cameron and Team Obama had worked hard in advance to shut down any possibility of a snub story. Mr Cameron and Mr Obama found common ground on the Gulf of Mexico oil leak Which was perhaps just as well since the inter-linked stories of the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico and American suspicions that BP may somehow have been involved in the decision to free the Lockerbie bomber presented problems of real substance to set alongside the vexed issues of the global economy and the war in Afghanistan. Mr Cameron's opposition to the release of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi while he was still innike shoes for sale opposition is politically useful in Washington, where the decision was greeted with deep anger. The prime minister spoke of asking the cabinet secretary to look back through old documents to see what else might be released and Mr Obama talked of the need to have all the facts in the case "laid out there". But there was no awkward pressure onnike shoes outlet Mr Cameron for a full-blown British investigation. Scotland, which actually released al-Megrahi, has already held one. Common ground There was common ground, too, on the need for BP to plug the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, clean up the waters and pay out appropriate compensation. The overall message was that such issues which some people had speculated might damage the special relationship could in fact be dealt with through it, a practical demonstration of its strength. World Cup 2010: the introduction of goal-line technology is a no-brainer

Everyone I spoke to when I was in South Africa was air shox shoesvery positive about the way they behaved and they deserve praise after years of criticism. It's a shame for the tournament that they have gone home. A lot of nonsense has been spoken and written about England's defeat toNike Basketball Shoes Germany, however. In my opinion, people are looking for things that are not there. If that 'goal' by Frank Lampard had been given – as it should have been – we would have gone it at half-time level. Then who knows what would have happened? Paper View: FA backing Capello to stay on Vibram Five FingersWhat I do know, as a manager, is that having to try to salvage a game at 1-2 is a damn sight more difficult than having to go out and try to win it at 2-2. And when you suffer a gross injustice like that disallowed goal then you can't just forget about it. And there's no way you can't talk about it. But neither does it mean that the world is against you. It's just a very bad refereeing decision. What you have to do is get the players to refocus and try to put it behind them. That's a very easy thing to say but a very difficult thing to do. But the bottom line is – that's all that is left for you. You also have to deal with it quickly. You have to work that through. It can't just be forgotten. It may beMBT Shoes as simple as saying: "Look, we are 2-1 down, we know we shouldn't be. But what we have to do now is to get back into this and make sure we win this game." And then you move on. People will say: "Why don't you use this to motivate the players?" But I don't see that either. Certainly the 'goal' brings back the debate over nike shoestechnology. The most frustrating thing in football has always been the goal that is scored but is not seen. Endless television replays don't help the referees and their assistants and I'm always amazed at the number of decisions they get right, especially with offsides. However, I believe that goal-line technology is discount Nike Shoesa 'no-brainer'. It has to be introduced. The big question beyond that is how far do we go with technology and analysing borderline decisions? It needs to be thought out. You get panels of pundits on TV and they can't even agree on some decisions. I think that we will find more and more thatwholesale nike shoes the fourth official, or the fifth one in the stand, will come into play. There will be greater co-ordination between them. The extra official will have the monitors to nike shoes on salesee whether or not he can help the referee. We have to be careful not to take this too far, as in American football. I certainly wouldn't want to see a situation whereby we are stopping the game for five minutes while a panel discuss it. We had extra officials behind the goals in the Europa League last season and, to be honest, you couldn't tell what difference they made. You don't know what they are saying tonike shoes for sale the referee. We didn't have any instances when they stepped on to the pitch frantically waving a flag to stop play but they were talking to the referee. But we did have two situations when bad decisions were made – one for us, one against us. So it was impossible to tell. As for England's performance as a whole, against Germany, I don't think it was that bad. But, of course, I know that a performance is judged by the result. What is certain is the players and manager won't be happy with the goals that were conceded. They were the result of bad defending. They know that. But we got some good strikes away – the disallowed goal, Lampard hit the crossbar, Steven Gerrard should have scored, their goalkeeper made an excellent save. I really don't think there was as much doomnike shoes outlet and gloom as has been portrayed. And neither do I think this England squad is too old by any stretch of the imagination. They are not an ageing team. It just so happens that a couple of the German youngsters, Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller, did very well. In the previous couple of games the young Holger Badstuber didn't do quite so well for them. What's more Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker, Arne Friedrich and Miroslav Klose are not young players. I don't subscribe to the theory that it was youth against age. We had James Milner, Glen Johnson, Wayne Rooney. But we all know the margin for error is so small. It could have been Germany going home. Instead it's England and just like with France and Italy the headlines are screaming.Nike Zoom Kobe IV All Star Nike Zoom LeBron James Soldier Nike Zoom Lebron Soldier III Nike Zoom Lebron V Low Nike Zoom Lebron VI

Iran launches nuclear fusion bid

Iran has launched a programme aimed at developing a nuclear fusion reactor - an ambition long-cherished by Western nations. Air Max 90 Current Flywire Asghar Sediqzadeh, head of the fusion research institute, said initial studies would last for two years, and a reactor would take 10 years to build. Fusion is used in hydrogen bombs, but scientists have been unable to harness the energy created in such reactions. Iran is already under UN sanctions because of its nuclear activities. The UN acted after Tehran ignored demands to halt its uranium-enrichment programme, amid fears in the West that the country is seeking atomic weapons. Womens Air Max 95 Zen Iran has always maintained its nuclear programme is intended only for peaceful purposes. At a ceremony to mark the beginning of the fusion project, Mr Sediqzadeh said 50 scientists would be working on the research. "Iran is one of the first countries to begin research in this field," he said. "We built one installation about 30 years ago. We had some delays in the past 10 years, [but] we can quickly make up for this time." Air Max 90 High Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, said the institute would have a budget of 80bn rials ( £5.2m; $8m). He said it would take 20 or 30 years for a fusion plant to become commercially viable. Scientists across the world have been trying for decades to harness the energy released by fusion reactions. Womens Air Max 97 They believe fusion would be far more efficient and environmentally friendly than current methods of power generation. Despite small-scale success in laboratories, no-one has yet developed an effective way of channelling energy from a fusion reaction. The international community agreed to build a fusion facility in France in 2006. The last one

In a little district westMbt Shoes of Washington Square the streets have run crazy and broken themselves into small strips called "places." These "places" make strange angles and curves. One Street crosses itself a time or two. An artist once discovered a valuable possibility in this street. Suppose a collector with a bill for paints, paper and canvas should, in traversing this route, suddenly meet himself coming back, without a cent having been paid on account! So, toCheap Women MBT Barabara quaint old Greenwich Village the art people soon came prowling, hunting for north windows and eighteenth-century gables and Dutch attics and low rents. Then they imported some pewter mugs and a chafing dish or two from Sixth Avenue, and became a "colony." At the top ofCheap MBT Beach a squatty, three-story brick Sue and Johnsy had their studio. "Johnsy" was familiar for Joanna. One was from Maine; the other from California. They had met at the table d'h?te of an Eighth Street "Delmonico's," and found their tastes in art, chicory salad and bishop sleeves so congenial that the joint studio resulted. That was in May. In November a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called Pneumonia, stalked about the colony, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Over on the east side this ravager strode boldly, smiting his victims by scores, but his feet trod slowly through the maze of the narrow and moss-grown "places." Mr. Pneumonia was Cheap MBT Changanot what you would call a chivalric old gentleman. A mite of a little woman with blood thinned by California zephyrs was hardly fair game for the red-fisted, short-breathed old duffer. But Johnsy he smote; and she lay, scarcely moving, on her painted iron bedstead, looking through the small Dutch window-panes at the blank side of the next brick house. One morning the busy doctor invited Sue into the hallway with a shaggy, gray eyebrow. "She has one chance in - let us say, ten," he said, as he shook down the mercury in his clinical thermometer. " And that chance is for her to want to live. This way people have of lining-u on the side of the undertaker makes the entire pharmacopoeia look silly. Your little lady has made up her mind that she's not going to get well. Has she anything on her mind?" "She - she wanted toCheap MBT Chapa paint the Bay of Naples some day." said Sue. "Paint? - bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking twice - a man for instance?" "A man?" said Sue, with a jew's-harp twang in her voice. "Is a man worth - but, no, doctor; there is nothing of the kind." "Well, it isCheap Men MBT Chapa the weakness, then," said the doctor. "I will do all that science, so far as it may filter through my efforts, can accomplish. But whenever my patient begins to count the carriages in her funeral procession I subtract 50 per cent from the curative power of medicines. If you will get her to ask one question about the new winter styles in cloak sleeves I will promise you a one-in-five chance for her, instead of one in ten." After the doctor had gone Sue went into the workroom and cried a Japanese napkin to a pulp. Then she swaggered into Johnsy's room with her drawing board, whistling ragtime. Johnsy lay, scarcely making aCheap Women MBT Chapa ripple under the bedclothes, with her face toward the window. Sue stopped whistling, thinking she was asleep. She arranged her board and began a pen-and-ink drawing to illustrate a magazine story. Young artists must pave their way to Art by drawing pictures for magazine stories that young authors write to pave their way to Literature. As Sue wasCheap MBT Lami sketching a pair of elegant horseshow riding trousers and a monocle of the figure of the hero, an Idaho cowboy, she heard a low sound, several times repeated. She went quickly to the bedside. Johnsy's eyes were open wide. She was looking out the window and counting - counting backward. "Twelve," she said, and little later "eleven"; and then "ten," and "nine"; and then "eight" and "seven", almost together. Sue look solicitously out of the window. What wasCheap MBT M.Walk there to count? There was only a bare, dreary yard to be seen, and the blank side of the brick house twenty feet away. An old, old ivy vine, gnarled and decayed at the roots, climbed half way up the brick wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken its leaves from the vine until its skeleton branches clung, almost bare, to the crumbling bricks. "What isCheap Men MBT M.Walk it, dear?" asked Sue. "Six," said Johnsy, in almost a whisper. "They're falling faster now. Three days ago there were almost a hundred. It made my head ache to count them. But now it's easy. There goes another one. There are only five left now." "Five what, dear? Tell your Sudie." "Leaves. On the ivy vine. When the Cheap Women MBT M.Walklast one falls I must go, too. I've known that for three days. Didn't the doctor tell you?" "Oh, I never heard of such nonsense," complained Sue, with magnificent scorn. "What have old ivy leaves to do with your getting well? And you used to love that vine so, you naughty girl. Don't be a goosey. Why, the doctor told me this morning that your chances for getting well real soon were - let's see exactly what he said - he said the chances were ten to one! Why, that's almost as good a chance as we have in New York when we ride on the street cars or walk past a new building. Try to take some broth now, and let Sudie go back to her drawing, so she can sell the editor man with it, and buy port wine for her sick child, and pork chops for her greedy self." "You needn't get any more wine," said Johnsy, keeping her eyes fixed out the window. "There goes another. No, I don't want any broth. That leaves just four. I want to see the last one fall before it gets dark. Then I'll go, too." "Johnsy, dear," said Sue, bending over her, "will you promise me to keep your eyes closed, and not look out theCheap MBT Maliza window until I am done working? I must hand those drawings in by to-morrow. I need the light, or I would draw the shade down." "Couldn't you draw in the other room?" asked Johnsy, coldly. "I'd rather be here by you," said Sue. "Beside, I don't want you to keep looking at those silly ivy leaves." "Tell me as soon as you have finished," said Johnsy, closing her eyes, and lying white and still as fallen statue, "because I want to see the last one fall. I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of thinking. I want to turn loose my hold on everything, and go sailing down, down, just like one of those poor, tired leaves." "Try to sleep," said Sue. "I must call Behrman up to be my model for the old hermit miner. I'll not be gone a minute. Don't try to move 'til I come back." Old Behrman wasCheap MBT Safiri a painter who lived on the ground floor beneath them. He was past sixty and had a Michael Angelo's Moses beard curling down from the head of a satyr along with the body of an imp. Behrman was a failure in art. Forty years he had wielded the brush without getting near enough to touch the hem of his Mistress's robe. He had been always about to paint a masterpiece, but had never yet begun it. For several years he had painted nothing except now and then a daub in the line of commerce or advertising. He earned a little by serving as a model to those young artists in the colony who could not pay the price of a professional. He drank gin to excess, and still talked of his coming masterpiece. For the rest he was a fierce little old man, who scoffed terribly at softness in any one, and who regarded himself as especial mastiff-in-waiting to protect the two young artists in the studio above. Sue found Behrman smelling strongly of juniper berries inCheap MBT Sport1 his dimly lighted den below. In one corner was a blank canvas on an easel that had been waiting there for twenty-five years to receive the first line of the masterpiece. She told him of Johnsy's fancy, and how she feared she would, indeed, light and fragile as a leaf herself, float away, when her slight hold upon the world grew weaker. Old Behrman, with his red eyes plainly streaming, shouted his contempt and derision for such idiotic imaginings. "Vass!" he cried. "IsCheap Men MBT Sport 1 dere people in de world mit der foolishness to die because leafs dey drop off from a confounded vine? I haf not heard of such a thing. No, I will not bose as a model for your fool hermit-dunderhead. Vy do you allow dot silly pusiness to come in der brain of her? Ach, dot poor leetle Miss Yohnsy." "She is very ill and weak," said Sue, "and the fever has left her mind morbid and full of strange fancies. Very well, Mr. Behrman, if you do not care to pose for me, you needn't. But I think you are a horrid old - old flibbertigibbet." "You are just like a woman!" yelled Behrman. "Who said I will not bose? Go on. I come mit you. For half an hour I haf peen trying to say dot I am ready to bose. Gott! dis is not any blace in which one so goot as Miss Yohnsy shall lie sick. Some day I vill baint a masterpiece, and ve shall all go away. Gott! yes." Johnsy was sleeping when they went upstairs. Sue pulled the shade down to the window-sill, and motioned Behrman into the other room. In there they peered out the window fearfully at the ivy vine. Then they looked at each other for a moment without speaking. A persistent, cold rain was falling, mingled with snow. Behrman, in his old blue shirt, took his seat as the hermit miner on an upturned kettle for a rock. When Sue awoke from an hour'sCheap Women MBT Sport 1 sleep the next morning she found Johnsy with dull, wide-open eyes staring at the drawn green shade. "Pull it up; I want to see," she ordered, in a whisper. Wearily Sue obeyed. But, lo! after the beating rain and fierce gusts of wind that had endured through the livelong night, there yet stood out against the brick wall one ivy leaf. It was the last one on the vine. Still dark green near its stem, with its serrated edges tinted with the yellow of dissolution and decay, it hung bravely from the branch some twenty feet above the ground. "It is the last one," said Johnsy. "I thought it would surely fall during the night. I heard the wind. It will fall to-day, and I shall die at the same time." "Dear, dear!" said Sue, leaning her worn face down to the pillow, "think of me, if you won't think of yourself. What would I do?" But Johnsy did not answer. The lonesomest thing in all the world is a soul when it is making ready to go on its mysterious, far journey. The fancy seemed to possess her more strongly as one by one the ties that bound her to friendship and to earth were loosed. The day wore away, and even through theCheap MBT Sport2 twilight they could see the lone ivy leaf clinging to its stem against the wall. And then, with the coming of the night the north wind was again loosed, while the rain still beat against the windows and pattered down from the low Dutch eaves. When it was light enough Johnsy, the merciless, commanded that the shade be raised. The ivy leaf was still there. Johnsy lay for a long time looking at it. And then she called to Sue, who was stirring her chicken broth over the gas stove. "I've been a bad girl, Sudie," said Johnsy. "Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is a sin to want to die. You may bring a me a little broth now, and some milk with a little port in it, and - no; bring me a hand-mirror first, and then pack some pillows about me, and I will sit up and watch you cook." And hour later she said: "Sudie, some day I hope to paint the Bay of Naples." The doctor came in the afternoon, and Sue had an excuse to go into the hallway as he left. "Even chances," said the doctor, taking Sue's thin, shaking hand in his. "With Cheap Men MBT Sport 2good nursing you'll win." And now I must see another case I have downstairs. Behrman, his name is - some kind of an artist, I believe. Pneumonia, too. He is an old, weak man, and the attack is acute. There is no hope for him; but he goes to the hospital to-day to be made more comfortable." The next day the doctor said to Sue: "She's out of danger. You won. Nutrition and care now - that's all." And that afternoon Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay, contentedly knitting a very blue and very useless woollen shoulder scarf, and put one arm around her, pillows and all. "I have something to tell you, white mouse," she said. "Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia to-day in the hospital. He was ill only two days. The janitor found him the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn't imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and aCheap Women MBT Sport 2 ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors mixed on it, and - look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's masterpiece - he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell." the article is from:http://www.dioenglish.com/wiki/index.php?doc-view-5516

Diamond council promises tough action on Zimbabwe

World Diamond Council president, Eli Izhakoff, plans to take a tough stance on air force shoes onlineZimbabwe when the grouping meets tomorrow in Russia to discuss among other things whether Zimbabwe should be allowed to sell its diamonds. (Pictured: World Diamond Council president Eli Izhakoff) A week-long meeting of the Kimberley Process (KP) diamond certification scheme in Tel Aviv three weeks ago, where Zimbabwe's compliance with the scheme's minimum requirements was hotly debated, ended in a deadlock. Over 75 of the world's diamond producing, trading and Nike Dunk Shoes onlinemanufacturing countries participating in the scheme are expected to meet again this week to make the final decision whether Zimbabwe can resume exporting its stockpiled diamonds. "As the past year has demonstrated, we will not be assembling in St. Petersburg simply to pay lip service to the values upon which the [World Diamond Council] was founded,” he warned. “The on-going situation in countries like Zimbabwe and the dedication of our industry to operate in a transparent and principled manner means that there are burning issues on the table, which we will discuss and for which we will formulate strategies," Izhakoff said in a statement. The WDC Annual Meeting will begin tomorrow with committee working sessions. The official opening of the meeting will take place on the morning of Thursday. It will be followed immediately by the WDC Plenary Session, where a guest of honour and keynote speaker will be Boaz Hirsch, Chairman of the Kimberley Process (KP) and a senior Israeli government official. Concern has in the past been raised at Vibram Five Fingers onlineZimbabwe's 'blood diamonds.' A number of prominent organisations, including Global Witness, Partnership Africa Canada, and Human Rights Watch have documented grave human rights abuses in Marange and have called on KP member states to suspend Zimbabwe from the scheme, halt the export of its stones, and broaden the mandate of the KP to include human rights violations committed by governments. Over the past two years, hundreds of MBT Shoes onlineinformal diamond panners have been killed in eastern Zimbabwe by units of the Zimbabwean army and police, which have also been intimately involved in the illicit exploitation and smuggling of diamonds from Marange. KP participant countries have so far failed to reach consensus on suspending Zimbabwe from membership. In November 2009, a compromise action plan was agreed upon by the KP and Zimbabwe , but evidence, including the raid on Centre for Research and Development, suggested that, while Zimbabwe might have addressed some technical concerns, the human rights situation on the ground had not improved. Civil society groups have called uponAir Max shoes on sale Kimberley Process members toair jordan shoes on sale suspend the monitoring arrangement provided for under the November work plan, until Zimbabwean authorities gave concrete assurances that people who provide information to the KP will not be persecuted and harassed by the state security agencies for their actions. Jailed human rights activist and diamonds researcher Farai Maguwu remained behind bars last weekend after a ruling on his bail appeal had been postponed until yesterday. The state prosecutor, last week, argued that Maguwu must remain in custody until the investigations were completed, saying he would ‘abscond’ if released and “interfere with investigations.” The prosecutor also said the state needed at least another month to conduct its investigations. Defence lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa said that the lack of evidence before Nike Shox Shoes on salethe court was a clear testimony that the state was “dragging its feet” in dealing with the matter. Maguwu has been in jail since June 3 for allegedly publishing information, which is prejudicial to the Zimbabwean state. Several requests to give him bail have been denied by the state. The European Parliament last week demanded for Maguwu’s release, who they said was jailed for exposing the army's atrocities in the Marange diamond fields. The continued incarceration of Maguwu, the abuse ofair shox shoes on sale Zimbabwe's diamond workers and the failure of international bodies to take action was brought to the attention of the European Parliament last Thursday by Conservative Member of the European Parliament, MEP, Geoffrey Van Orden. The European Conservative and Reformist Group drafted a motion calling for the support of the European Parliament to demand Maguwu’s release and called upon the KP to address this issue. President Robert Mugabe has accused Western countries of refusing to certify the sale of Zimbabwe diamonds as a way of blunting targeted sanctions against his regime and prevent it from reasserting itself. Mugabe, addressing an inner Cabinet of his Zanu (PF) party, the Central Committee last week singled out Australia, Canada and the US as countries he said were pressuring the KP Certification Scheme from endorsing a resumption of exports from Marange. The KP is a rough diamond certification scheme, established in 2003 that brings together governments, industry and civil society, and aims to eradicate the trade in conflict diamonds. "We have been put in the dock for having diamonds inNike Basketball Shoes on sale our territory and for wanting to exploit them with partners from other countries other than from these other Western nations," Mugabe said, without elaborating which other countries had partnered Zimbabwe. If fully mined, the Marange diamonds could make up 25 percent of the global supply, earning Zimbabwe US$1.7 billion monthly. He denounced Western countries for imposing "sanctions" on Zimbabwean leaders over charges of vote rigging and rights abuses, and said they wanted his regime to collapse. "We have been put in the dock because it is asserting Zimbabwe that has found diamonds and is thus likely to be even more assertive in outlook," the veteran leader, 86, said. "We have been put in the dock because these same countries haveNike Air Force Shoes on sale imposed illegal sanctions on us for our total ruin and diamonds will thus blunt their sanction by enabling us to offset and checkmate their disastrous effects on our people and on our economy." Harare insists it has complied with KP's demands. Authorities cite a recent positive report from the KP regulator's monitor Abbey Chikane who recommended that diamonds from Chiadzwa be given the legal certification from the KP to allow their sale. This was despite evidence given by Maguwu and other human rights groups that abuses were in fact continuing. Chikane was fingered as the instigator of Maguwu’s arrest, which happened shortly after a confidential meeting between the two men. Maguwu has said Chikane ‘shopped’ him to the police and it was widely believed that Maguwu’s ongoing detention was a deliberate attempt to silence him. Human rights groups said there was documented evidence of the massacre of over 200 illegal diggers and said soldiers were still engaging in forced labour, torture and harassment.MBT Tunisha MBT Kisumu Sandals Adidas Samba Nua Nike Zoom Lebron VII Adidas T-MAC 3.0
